Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is an organic compound characterized by colorless crystals that are highly hygroscopic. It is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and other organic solvents, slightly soluble in ether, and insoluble in hydrocarbons. Glycolic acid exhibits dual properties of both an alcohol and an acid.
Glycolic acid was first obtained in 1848 by treating glycine with nitrous acid and was confirmed in 1851. It occurs widely in nature, such as in sugarcane, sugar beets, and unripe grape juice, but its content is low, making it difficult to isolate and recover. Industrial production typically relies on synthetic methods.
