Since 2023, the market for dodecenylsuccinic anhydride (DDSA) has continued to expand, with manufacturers in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, leading the way and serving as the world's largest production and supply base.
Dodecenylsuccinic anhydride (DDSA, also known as 2-dodecen-1-ylsuccinic anhydride) is mainly used industrially as an epoxy resin curing agent. The curing process provides higher crosslinking strength, better flexibility, enhanced electrical resistance, as well as improved durability and water resistance of the material. In addition, it can be used as a corrosion inhibitor in lubricating oils and as a resin modifier.
Depending on the molecular structure of the olefin feedstock, DDSA can be divided into two types: linear (LDDSA) and branched (BDDSA):
Linear DDSA (LDDSA) is produced by reacting high-purity linear internal olefins with maleic anhydride under heating. It has a purity of over 99% and an average molecular weight of 254–266.
Branched DDSA (BDDSA) is produced by reacting maleic anhydride with polymer gasoline or tetrapropylene. It has a purity of approximately 85% and a wider average molecular weight range (260–368), with a relatively simpler production process.
In terms of appearance, branched DDSA is typically liquid, while linear DDSA is closer to a solid or semi-solid at room temperature due to its more regular structure. Because the branched type is liquid, it is easier to handle in practice and its properties suit most general applications. The linear type is more suitable for use as a high-end resin modifier to optimize the long-term performance of materials.
In addition to being an epoxy resin curing agent, dodecenylsuccinic acid and its derivatives have the following applications:
Rust preventive in lubricating oils: Hydrolyzed to form linear dodecenylsuccinic acid, used in turbine oils, steam turbine oils, hydraulic oils, and preservation oils.
Modified starch improver: Used to produce dodecenylsuccinate starch esters, improving viscosity and anti-aging stability in food, pharmaceutical, and coating applications.
Textile and printing industries: Used in the preparation of neutral paper sizing agents (ASA) as well as water repellents for textiles and leather.
Asphalt modifier: Reduces asphalt viscosity and enhances deformation strength.
Dodecenylsuccinic anhydride (CAS: 26544-38-7) is widely used in resin production, processing industries, and the textile sector, with mature production processes and stable quality and capacity.
